Challenge:

In 2023, Adelaide-based national logistics company Hi-Trans Express reached the end of the road with its previous telematics supplier. The existing technology had an unclear upgrade path, lacked integration with Hi-Trans Express’ business software and ERP systems, and was not ready for the forthcoming 3G shutdown.

With its fleet management requirements at a crossroads, Hi-Trans Express had a vision for what it wanted from a modern telematics solution. This included the need for better real-time fatigue management, the integration of mass management tools, compatibility with its business software and a clear path towards 4G.

The company also wanted to streamline its business processes using rich data insights to help reduce administration, as well as eliminate the compliance burden of paper-based fatigue management systems. Further, Hi-Trans Express sought to optimise the business’s workflow with electronic documents, messaging, performance monitoring, and driver scorecards, along with access to higher payloads via the Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA).

EWDs have greatly benefited us. The platform has helped reduce administration and make it easier for drivers to know their fatigue schedules. We would highly recommend the Teletrac Navman suite to any operator.

– Lloyd Jones, Chief Operating Officer, Hi-Trans Express.

Solution:

Hi-Trans Express chose Teletrac Navman’s technology platform to provide rich, actionable data insights. This included electronic work diaries (EWDs), outward-facing cameras, and the TN360 fleet management software.

Ahead of the transition, Hi-Trans Express worked closely with Teletrac Navman’s experts to understand the business's direction, long-term goals, and desire for an integrated telematics solution.

It took just under two months for the company to settle on Teletrac Navman’s comprehensive product suite, which included implementing electronic work diaries, in-vehicle driver displays and TN360. The EWDs were positively received by drivers, who appreciated the reduced paperwork and their ability to better understand their fatigue schedule and work and rest hours.

Hi-Trans Express also plans to incorporate Teletrac Navman’s mass management solution by the end of 2024, allowing it to unlock access to increased payloads, ease its regulatory and compliance requirements, and allow drivers to understand how their trucks are loaded, helping to maximise productivity.

Results:

Implementing Electronic Work Diaries (EWDs) has led to significant productivity and compliance enhancements for Hi-Trans Express. Their key outcomes include:

  1. Staff Redeployment: The elimination of manual processing allowed four employees to be redeployed to focus on strategic initiatives.

  2. Simplified Driver Experience: Drivers can easily log work and rest periods on the EWD device, which also alerts them for scheduled breaks, enhancing their overall experience.

  3. Reduced Stress and Improved Compliance: The EWD technology provides drivers with confidence in meeting fatigue regulations, significantly reducing stress levels.

  4. Enhanced Operational Efficiency: EWDs and TN360 provide valuable data for optimizing routes and work allocation, improving workplace safety and ensuring drivers return home after shifts.

These results collectively enhance the operational framework of Hi-Trans Express.
