Challenge:
In 2023, Phil Jarratt, the managing director of Jarratt Transport Solutions, highlighted the need for modernisation in the company's operations. The decision to implement Teletrac Navman’s electronic work diaries (EWD) coincided with a shift from relying on contract drivers and trucks to building an in-house fleet in 2021. Although the company had been operating in various forms since the early 1990s, the transition to owning trucks and employing drivers was driven by stricter Chain of Responsibility (COR) regulations and the need for reliable contractors. Jarratt noted that this complete overhaul of the company structure is a rare occurrence in the transport and logistics sector.
What really makes a difference is the variety of performance and efficiency metrics that TN360 displays,” he says. “This is what generates the fuel savings, which I’d estimate being in the area of 2000-3000 litres per month.
Solution:
Jarratt Transport Solutions embraced the full suite of Teletrac Navman fleet management solutions, including calibrated electronic scales. These scales were recently tested against a weighbridge, revealing discrepancies that underscored the importance of accurate data. The fleet management solutions enabled the company to conduct driver coaching and introduced a scorecard system that fosters healthy competition among drivers, with quarterly bonuses for top performers. Jarratt explained that while the EWDs don’t directly contribute to fuel savings, the performance metrics provided by the Teletrac Navman system have been instrumental in achieving significant fuel efficiency. The system alerts drivers to harsh braking, excessive acceleration, and close following, promoting eco-friendly driving practices that lead to substantial fuel savings.
By integrating the EWDs with the fleet management system, Jarratt Transport Solutions has become more efficient and predictable. Jarratt elaborated that the system allows for accurate scheduling, ensuring drivers are well-rested and prepared for their next journey. The EWDs are well-received by drivers, as they eliminate risks associated with miscalculating rest periods, providing operational staff with full visibility of drivers' schedules. The effectiveness of the EWDs is evident, with the company maintaining 100% compliance during six audits.
